We are fortunate that the Waikawa Catchment still contains a range of remnant ecosystems which were more widespread in pre-human times. Our awa / river is relatively unmodified which is a rarity in the lowlands of Murihiku / Southland where most streams have been straightened. Remant ecosystems are beneficial for several reasons including:
- Inspiring communities to take action
- Providing reference ecosystems
- Serving as biodiversity storehouses - refuges for wildlife, plant species, soil fungi and bacteria, and their locally adapted genetics
Looking carefully we can see patterns emerge which help to guide restoration and enhancement efforts. Wetland ecosystem drivers are hydrology followed by fertility, temperature and finally landform and soil types. The primary driver of other terrestrial ecosystems is temperature followed by moisture and then landform and soils.
